Sensitive Teeth Can Be a Problem

Sensitive Teeth Can Be a Problem

Do you have sensitivity in a tooth? Are hot or cold beverages or ice cream making you wince? You may have tried sensitivity toothpaste, and it did not help that much. As a your holistic dentist in Ottawa, we want to discuss the reasons for this sensitivity.

Your teeth may know that winter has arrived

As colder weather arrives, your teeth may be hurting more. Winter cold makes your teeth contract. It can lead to cracks in the teeth and the feeling of pain. Weather sensitivity can add to the pain of a tooth that is already vulnerable due to a number of causes besides the Canadian cold.

Tooth sensitivity can have many causes

From grinding down the enamel from clenching your teeth to a tooth in need of a root canal, there are many reasons for teeth that are sensitive. The following are a few of the causes:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Cavities and tooth decay
  • Grinding and clenching
  • Tooth whitening materials
  • Root canal problems
  • Fractured teeth
  • Improper brushing

Not brushing enough and use of tobacco can cause the gums to receded and pain to ensue. Improper brushing may wear away the enamel.

Have you ever considered your love of citrus and juices or carbonated drinks may be causing you pain? Acidic foods and drink may affect the enamel as well, causing sensitivity.

Why the pain? The nerves under the gum line that make up the dentin may be exposed. Heat, cold and acidity stimulate these nerves and cause the sensation of pain or sensitivity.

Help is nearby

If you have sensitive teeth, the first thing to do is see a dentist to find out the cause of the sensitivity. Dental exams can rule out causes such as root canals, cavities, filling issues and grinding habits. There are a number of treatments that can be done by a dentist, depending on the cause of the sensitivity.

There are some measures that you can do at home which include:

  • Switching to a sensitivity toothpaste
  • Brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Rinsing daily with fluoride
  • Changing diet away from sweet, acidic and sour foods

If certain acidic foods are part of your natural diet, rinse your mouth with water after you eat them. Good oral hygiene will also help with sensitivity and future problems from cavities and plaque.
